IDE@S Usability Short Course - Understanding Users

There are a range of methods for collecting both qualitative and quantitative data about the user drawn from a range of disciplines. Some of these techniques are available when redesigning a website or application, e.g. web analytics, help desk logs. Other techniques are required when designing an interactive product from scratch and can include questionnaires, structured or semi-structured interviews, focus groups, work observation and contemporary archaeology. All these techniques have benefits and pitfalls, some provide richer data but are expensive in both time and costs, some can provide misleading data if not used carefully.

During this workshop these techniques will be examined in detail along with their potential problems and advice on which are most appropriate to use depending on the scale of the project to be undertaken.

The collection of data is of little use if it cannot be effectively used to inform potential design options. This part of the workshop will look at how to use the data gathered through techniques such as rapid contextual design and the creation of personas and scenarios.

It will also look at how at the link between initial design decisions and evaluation is made through techniques such as RITE (Rapid Iterative Testing and Evaluation).

Upon successful completion of this module, students will have demonstrated:
